That tradition reminds me of the Southern USA tradition of eating "Hoppin' John" on New Years for good luck.

(Personally, I like to cook my field peas or black eyed peas until they're very done. I cook them with a piece of salt-pork or a ham hock for added flavor and a hint of fattiness. I like the water with the peas to thicken to an almost gravy-like consistency. I think that works better with adding to rice than just having cooked and strained peas.)

Edit: Here's another recipe. I think I like this one better. Though, I disagree with cooking the peas until "tender but not mushy." I like them mushy. Black eyed peas and field peas, to me, are a dish that just gets better the more you cook it, and the more often you reheat it after the first time you serve.

reading Haruna blogs makes me happy 

Wow, a sumptuous rice meal! But Haruna did not mention if she or her family cooked it.

Last year, I was reading a interview of Haruna on a Tumblr page that she started to enjoy cooking specially ramen since she became independent (unfortunately, I forgot the source). I think most individuals learn to appreciate cooking and other household chores once they start living alone, compare when they're living with their parents.
