Metallica is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California whose early releases included fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed them as one of the founding "big four" of thrash metal alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. They formed in 1981 when James Hetfield responded to an advertisement that drummer Lars Ulrich had posted in a local newspaper. As of 2003, the line-up features long-time lead guitarist Kirk Hammett (who joined the band in 1983) and bassist Robert Trujillo (a member since 2003) alongside Hetfield and Ulrich. Previous members of the band are lead guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to found the band Megadeth), and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted. The band also had a long collaboration with producer Bob Rock, who produced all of its albums from 1990 to 2003 and served as a temporary bassist between the departure of Newsted and the hiring of Trujillo.

The band earned a growing fan-base in the underground music community and critical acclaim with its third album Master of Puppets (1986), described as one of the most influential and "heavy" thrash metal albums. Metallica achieved substantial commercial success with their eponymous fifth album (also known as The Black Album), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. With this release the band expanded its musical direction resulting in an album that appealed to a more mainstream audience.

In 2000, Metallica was among a number of artists who filed a lawsuit against Napster for sharing the band's copyright-protected material for free without any band member's consent. A settlement was reached, and Napster became a pay-to-use service. Despite reaching number one on the Billboard 200, the release of St. Anger (2003) alienated many fans with the exclusion of guitar solos and the "steel-sounding" snare drum. A film titled Some Kind of Monster documented the recording process of St. Anger and the tensions within the band during that time.

Metallica has released nine studio albums, three live albums, five extended plays, 24 music videos, and 45 singles. The band has won nine Grammy Awards, and has had five consecutive albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200, making Metallica the first band to do so; this record was later matched by the Dave Matthews Band. The band's 1991 album, Metallica, has sold over 15 million copies in the United States, and 22 million copies worldwide, which makes it the 25th-best-selling album in the country. In December 2009, it became the best-selling album of the SoundScan era, surpassing 1997's Come on Over by country artist Shania Twain. The band has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide as of the release of their latest album, Death Magnetic (2008). As of December 2009, Metallica is the fourth best-selling music artist since the SoundScan era began tracking sales on May 25, 1991, selling a total of 52,672,000 albums in the United States alone. As of 2011, Metallica is working on a new album. On October 31, 2011, a collaborative album with Lou Reed, titled Lulu, was released.

I'm very surprised that there's no Metallica thread on here! Their original bass player, Cliff Burton played the bass with his fingers which is how Tomomi plays the bass!

Yeah, Metallica rules!! Since high school, I already start collecting their cassette until Load&Reload..(I came from the cassette age, guys! No CD yet,lol..), lil' bit disappointed with St.Anger, but then well satisfied by Death Magnetic, they back to the roots and became more progressive..(like AJFA)..
My favourite albums is Master of Puppets & And Justice..Nothing beat them both! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I once had Iron Maiden live concert cassette @hammersmith, but my friends borrowed and lost it!! Ough.. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] That's a good stuff!

I still have all my Metallica cassettes lying around in a box somewhere in the house Tongue

I hated St. Anger. What were they thinking when they recorded that!?

My all time favourite Metallica album has to be Justice. It's so epic, it's epic. Kill em all is also fantastic.

Load and Reload wasn't very good at first but I got used to it and I found the 2 albums to be fun. Death Magnetic was pretty good, a good change in form for them. But for me Justice and Killem all can't be beat.

*Facepalms* St. Anger was a good album, just not their best! And they had a lot of stuff going on when they were trying to make that album, like James having to go to rehab for his alcohol addiction and other personal issues! .omg. .wtf. .tsk. .nani. .mad.

I like Load and Re-Load because they were different and new! They both have some pretty great songs on them, "Mama Said", "Until It Sleeps", "Fuel", "The Memory Remains", "Low Man's Lyric", "The Outlaw Torn", all some pretty good songs. I like the older stuff just as much as everyone else does, but I also like the stuff that they put out the "Black Album"! "Death Magnetic" was a very amazing album that had them go back to their roots. But you REALLY need to try and give the other stuff past the first 5 albums a chance!

Here I am calling myself a big fan of Metallica and I didn't even create their thread here. Facepalm Thanks for creating the thread SuperSentaifan4ever! Happy Well, actually I thought no one would care, but it seems I was wrong. I like a lot of their songs. Although I haven't heard all of them, I could safely say I like at least one from each of their albums. Yes, even St. Anger. Maybe I didn't hear their early albums first so that's why I'm not that surprised with their diff. sound. My favorite album is Ride The Lightning. I'm happy I researched about them because if not I would have never heard their first three albums which I think are classics. I like all of their sound. From Kill 'Em All's very fast and punk inspired thrash metal sound and screamed vocals to the Black Album's slower and heavier sound with the trademark vocals that they have been popularly known. I also was very relieved with their Death Magnetic album and the effort they did to try to merge their old and new sound which I think was a success. Many "metalheads" hate Metallica and call them sell outs but I think they are an iconic band. They helped pave the way for thrash and have inspired many bands that are into various genres of metal. Their "selling out" imo is just a change, a decision the band decided to make their music different and attract a broad audience. In retrospect the metal bands who stay on one genre are just being confined by how the elitist metal fans wants them to be. Well, I guess not all of the bands but some definitely are. Wow, long post. lol XD

I don't see what the big deal is with Lars' drums sounding the way that they did but maybe that's just me! I also didn't have any problem with there not being any guitar solos either. .fustrated.

Ok, to be fair the St. Anger CD I bought had a bonus DVD on it with a live studio session. I liked that DVD quite a lot. But as far as the album went, I just didn't like it. I tried to really, considering how much it cost me but it just didn't work out. Maybe it's my ears Tongue

Load and Reload I ended up liking quite a lot. It took a bit of getting used to but yeah, good stuff on those CDs.

Just learned that they are coming to have a concert in Hong Kong next January for the first time.
Well, they are great influence on me since the 90's. There was a time I had all my guitars loaded with EMG pickups haha!
To be honest, I never listened to their music for about 10 years now. Can't decide whether to go or not.

I suggest if you have never seen them before, don't let this opportunity pass.  Considering the aggressive style of music they play, the chance of Lars still being able to drum into his 60's may be slim.

I always catch Megadeth and Anthrax every time they come to town, and I've been able to see Testament, Overkill and Armored Saint a few times (missed Metal Church and Slayer this last year, but oh well).  Anyway, my point is thrash metal takes a beating on the drummer and I think these classic bands will only last as long as their drummer can hold up (unless they go with a younger replacement).

I haven't seen Metallica live for a number of years, but I'm looking forward to them coming to Los Angeles this year.  Hoping the ticket prices won't be outrageous-- that's what's kept me away so long.
Also looking forward to the new album coming put in a month.  Currently have Death Magnet on my iPod for the gym, but Ride The Lightning is my favorite.

I will second DonDio in telling You to go to Metallica show. It might not be the greatest day in Your life, but You will see perfectly oiled machine in working. I was on a few of their shows, as they visit Poland quite frequently and I never regret that. Although they might lack what I would call "spirit" or freshness or artistry or whatever, but they never sink below level of good, perfectly organized show worth of money spent on ticket. Especially if You have never seen them live.

@DonDio
Anthrax, yeah! With Beladonna back in team they somehow revived. I was at their first show with him back - 2010's Sonisphere in Warsaw and they were THE best part of the show - with energy and enjoyment just pouring off the stage.

I am a huge fan of Metallica since their Black Album days in 1991. My older buddies told stories about James Hetfield cursing in Tagalog and the crowd went wild when they performed in Manila back in early 1993.

I love both Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets. But, my favorites are Load and Death Magnetic.

I already have preordered "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct" both on iTunes.

I don't mean to take over a Metallica thread by saying how awesome Anthrax is, but they have always been my favorite of the Big 4, mostly because of Joey's vocal ability.  So I'm glad he's back in the lineup.  I met Scott a year ago at a Heart concert (of all places), and got to tell him just that.  They're also the most fun of the Big 4.

Back to Metallica...

I always loved their music, and supported them even through those changing years in the 90s when they tried to expand their sound and do things different than they had previously.  It was pretty gutsy for them to do at the time.  I cared less that they cut their hair (yeah, that was big deal for fans then), but they started to lose me as an ultra-fan when they went after Napster and fans that were downloading music.  It seemed very hypocritical since a large part of their early fan-base was established by kids trading tapes with each other across the country.  That's how I discovered them in the mid-80s.

You used to see ads in the back of fanzines where someone listed the bands and music they liked and then you'd make a tape and mail it with your music interests.  They'd send you a thank you by sending their own tape.  I had friends at another high school that ran in a completely different crowd than me, and they were trading, too.  Through all this I discovered the early thrash bands; the NWOBHM bands (aside form Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Saxon); punk bands like The Misfits, Suicidal Tendancies and Black Flag; two-tone ska and the resurgence bands like Fishbone; and then early funk/rock like the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  It was a goldmine for discovering new music that wasn't on the radio.  Metallica benefitted so much from this community and got three platinum albums with no radio airplay or MTV videos.  When Lars went after the modern trading system of Napster, it seemed very short-sighted and thankless.  I know from my own experience, when I got a couple of songs I liked, I went out and bought the actual albums.  Anyway, that's my rant for the night.

Sorry for being out of topic here.

You are quite blessed (or lucky) for having an opportunity to trade tapes and subscribe to metal zines. That was pretty exciting! Most of the time, the affluent kids (and university students) in Manila had access to tape and zine trading. I grew up in a poor family so, I never had that experience even I created a few zines for myself. Although, I bought a few used copies of Metal Edge especially those issues with free CDs at a Book Sale branch near the university I have attended.

Most Filipinos back then were recording songs from the radio and we pause the tape right when DJ queues right before the song fade which was a common practice to prevent piracy. Fortunately, DJs of a defunct rock radio station NU 107 allowed fans who can't afford to buy tapes and CDs to record and enjoy the music.

This clip came out today of Metallica singing "Enter Sandman" with a guy at the grocery store deli counter.  This is apparently a random event that was captured for an upcoming segment for the show "Billy On The Street."   Don't worry-- I never heard of it either, but it had to be cool to be the deli guy.

This Saturday Metal Allegiance played a tribute show in Anaheim, CA to their "fallen idols."  This was absolutely one of the best concerts I've been to, and wanted to share the Metallica portion.

Ray Burton came out and told a couple stories about Cliff which was really nice.  Ray is quite a fan of the music and bands his son helped to inspire, but it gets too fast for him to tap his foot along with the beat (he turns 92 this week).  He said Cliff got interested in playing the bass because of the theme song to "Barney Miller."  I guess we can all thank Hal Linden for "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth."  BTW, Mark Menghi is playing Cliff's bass in the two clips below.  Enjoy.

There are more videos on YouTube from the show if you're interested.  They covered Pantera, Exodus, Ozzy, Queen, Bowie, Prince, Dio, AC/DC, Deep Purple, Megadeth, Motorhead and a few others.

Funny Scandal-related experience for me... I recognized the Japanese crowd standing directly in front of me as the same group that stood in front of me the night before at a Paul Gilbert concert in Hollywood (small world, huh?).  I got to try out my Japanese speech skills (after only two weeks of classes), and found out they were from Osaka.  I asked if they knew Scandal and showed them my phone so they knew what I was talking about (I was listening to "Encore" on the drive over).  They seemed surprised I knew who Scandal was, but they liked that I did.
